How to calculate the calorie content of a finished dish and your portion

Raw ingredients, mass after cooking and plate size are three different values. Here's how to avoid mixing them up when recording homemade meals.

First, gather the ingredients

Write down the mass of each product and its nutritional value per 100 g. For packaging, take the data from the label; For a product from the catalog, check whether the entry corresponds to its condition: raw, cooked or ready. Separately take into account the oil, dressing and other additives that ended up in the dish.

For one ingredient, the calculation is as follows: calories per 100 g × mass used / 100. You can also calculate proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Then add up the results for all ingredients. This amount is for the entire recipe, not for one serving.

Example with conditional values

The numbers below illustrate arithmetic and are not a table of nutritional values for specific foods. In your recipe, fill in the information from the labels and the measured weights.

IngredientWeightEnergy for recipe
Cereals, approximately 360 kcal per 100 g100 g360 kcal
Vegetables, approximately 30 kcal per 100 g300 g90 kcal
Butter, approximately 900 kcal per 100 g10 g90 kcal
Whole dishAfter cooking, weigh separately540 kcal

Slurry ready dish

The product may absorb or lose water during cooking. Therefore, the sum of the masses of the raw ingredients does not have to coincide with the mass of the finished dish. In our example, let's say that after cooking we get 600 g of food. Then 540 / 600 × 100 = 90 kcal per 100 g.

If 250 g of this dish is eaten, the entry will be 90 × 250 / 100 = 225 kcal. These values remain an estimate: the result is affected by the initial information, remaining oil in the pan and the accuracy of the weighing.

How to save a recipe in Dayana

  1. Open the food section and create a recipe from the selected ingredients.
  2. Check the mixtures used and indicate the yield of the finished dish.
  3. Save the recipe to your library.
  4. When adding to your diary, select your portion; Don't write down the whole recipe if only part is eaten.

The next time you prepare, check to see if the composition or yield has changed. A large pot of extra water and a heavier version of the same dish may have different calories per 100g.

If there is only a photograph

Based on the image, the AI does not measure grams and does not see all the ingredients. You can start recording with a photo, but it is better to clarify the known composition and weighed portion manually. Hidden sauce or oil can change the rating, even if it is almost invisible in the photo.
